In formal professions like the legal field, there is often uncertainty regarding the appropriate way to address a lawyer, as their work is steeped in rituals and protocols that require a certain level of formality in interactions.
The position necessitates a high level of legal expertise, and lawyers are commonly referred to as “doctors,” though this may not be accurate. The historical origins of this title add an interesting dimension to the discussion.

According to the Law on Guidelines for Good Education (9.394 of 1996), the use of the title “Doctor” must be reserved for individuals who hold a Doctorate degree. This advanced level of education requires a significant professional journey before the title can be obtained.
The Education Law establishes the criteria for evaluating academic theses.
According to this legal decree, in order for a university graduate to be recognized as a doctor, they must write and defend an original thesis following academic guidelines. Additionally, they must have obtained other academic qualifications beyond their undergraduate degree.

The Emperor’s Command
Few people are aware that in 1827, Emperor Dom Pedro I granted the title of Doctor to all individuals who were officially recognized as lawyers.
The Alvará Régio issued by Queen Maria I of Portugal bestowed upon law graduates the title of doctor of law. Subsequently, Dom Pedro I proclaimed August 11 as the day to celebrate the establishment of legal education in Brazil.
Within the document’s lines, one can find the words spoken by Dom Pedro I.
If that seemed a bit outdated, feel free to believe it, but there has been no explicit cancellation of this requirement up to now. Even the statute of advocacy, established in 1994, which in Article 87 repeals any provisions that go against the law, does not do away with the requirement for a lawyer to have a doctorate.
Hence, it is not deemed incorrect or inappropriate for a lawyer to undergo medical treatment.
